A Glimpse Into Fifth Grade
A Reflection brought to you by:
Raya Simons
A Grade 5 student shares her honest thoughts on school, friendships, and daily life in elementary school.

“Always try to… compromise and not be the friend who starts fights in a group”

Raya describes her day as “boring, obnoxious, and… sometimes fun,” she expresses the mix of routine and excitement in elementary school and reflects on the multiple dynamics of her everyday life. Raya describes herself as a kind, tidy, driven student who mediates the drama in her friend group. She is confident and mature for her age.
Within the classroom, Raya explains that she often finds it uncomfortable to approach teachers for help and instead prefers to seek support from her peers. This preference highlights a common dynamic among students, where peer-to-peer interaction can feel more available than speaking directly with a teacher. Her response suggests that support is available but students often feel more comfortable accessing it through their peers.
In her social circle, Raya takes on the role of the “mutual person,” describing herself as someone who helps resolve conflict and “brings the group back together.” As a strong listener, she plays an important role in maintaining balance within her friend group, demonstrating emotional awareness.
Outside of class, Raya explained off camera that she and her friends sometimes sneak onto the playground, even though it is only for students under Grade 4. This detail reflects how students create their own freedom and fun within the school rules and environment.
When asked what advice she would give to students entering elementary school, Raya emphasizes the importance of being kind, staying focused, and keeping your space tidy. Overall, her perspective provides some insight of elementary school life, within the classroom, social dynamics, and her raw emotions.

This is so awesome. Raya spoke so well and answered all the questions with confidence. I am so proud of her.
